About David R. Hardten, M.D.
David R. Hardten, MD, FACS, is a board certified and recognized leader in the subspecialty areas of cornea, external disease, anterior segment, cataract, refractive and laser surgery in the field of ophthalmology. Dr. Hardten is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and is actively involved in teaching residents at Regions Hospital for the University of Minnesota Ophthalmology residency program, and the fellows at the Veterans Medical Center for the fellowship program. Dr. Hardten is the director of Minnesota Eye Consultants fellowship and optometric residency program, both of which are prestigious, yearlong fellowships that trains doctors in the subspecialty of cornea and external disease, glaucoma, cataract and refractive surgery.
Dr. Hardten was born in Kansas City, Kansas, and graduated from Shawnee Mission South High School in Shawnee Mission. He attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence and graduated with honors in chemistry. He went on to complete his medical school training at the University of Kansas in Kansas City and was accepted to the University of Minnesota Ophthalmology residency program. While completing his residency training, he was awarded the Richard T. Olson Best Resident Teaching Award for two consecutive years, the Harry Plotke Outstanding Resident Award, and the Castroviejo Corneal Society Fellowship Award. He completed his fellowship training in Cornea and External Disease at the University of Minnesota and received the ARVO/National Eye Institute Fellow Award.
In 1995 he went into private practice with Drs. Richard L. Lindstrom and Thomas W. Samuelson and is currently a founding partner in Minnesota Eye Consultants in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dr. Hardten has an active private practice with Minnesota Eye Consultants and Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. He also has an active practice in greater Minnesota, providing medical and surgical services to communities inside and outside of the Twin Cities.
As the director for Minnesota Eye Consultants research department, Dr. Hardten is actively involved in many research projects that deal with the latest refractive procedures for correction of myopia, astigmatism, and hyperopia. He presents this data at major congress meetings.
Dr. Hardten lectures throughout the world on refractive surgery. He has published over 20 chapters and 100 articles on cornea, cataract and refractive surgery. He is a teacher for VISX and Laser Vision Centers and teaches physicians to perform LASIK.
Dr. and Mrs. (Christine) Hardten reside in western Minneapolis on Lake Minnetonka. They enjoy golf, swimming, fishing, and traveling with their two daughters, Adeline and Sophia.
